Ingredient List

  • 1 package firm tofu

  • ¼ cup cornstarch + 2 tbsp for later

  • ⅓ cup yellow onion, sliced lengthwise

  • 1 cup sweet red, yellow and/or orange peppers, cored and sliced lengthwise

  • ½ cup green pepper, cored and sliced lengthwise

  • 1 small jalapeno, seeded, deveined, and chopped

  • ½ cup cilantro chopped + extra for garnish

  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce

  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce

  • 2 tbsp cooking sherry

  • ½ cup low sodium vegetable broth

  • 2 tsp sugar

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 3 tbsp peanut oil

  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced

  • 2 large cloves garlic minced

  • ½ tsp ground black pepper

Directions

Step 1 — Drain and wrap tofu in a dish towel or paper towel. Very gently press the tofu block to remove the water. Repeat 4-5 times. Slice tofu in half horizontally and then in half again. You will have 4 “steaks.”

Step 2 — In a large non-stick or cast iron skillet heat the peanut oil on high. Dust each tofu steak with cornstarch, careful to remove any excess. Place steaks in hot oil cooking until golden brown, turning only once (about 3 minutes per side). Remove steak to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. While the tofu is browning, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, sherry, black pepper, vegetable broth, and sesame oil with ½ tablespoon cornstarch in a small bowl. Set aside.

Step 3 — Lower the temperature to medium high and in the same pan add onion, jalapeno, and garlic cooking for 1 minute. (If the pan is a bit dry after browning the tofu just add a bit more peanut oil.) Next add the peppers, sauteing for about 5 minutes. Re-whisk the sauce mixture and then pour into the pan along with the cilantro. Stir to combine with the peppers. Add the tofu back into the pan. Carefully turn each steak to coat with sauce. Allow to cook and the sauce to thicken for about 3 minutes. If the sauce appears too thick just drizzle in a bit more broth until preferred consistency. Garnish with cilantro when serving.
